This lighthouse-guarded, ocean-bluff-hugging nine-holer is a worthy alternative to channeling back in time to the game’s Scottish roots four hundred-plus years ago. Of all the courses on Cape Cod that can make you forget all your troubles, forget all your cares, Truro’s pride and joy is at the top of the list.

The second tee affords a view of both the bay and the mighty Atlantic, but don’t get lost in the sight-seeing, for you’ll need to concentrate on hitting a straight ball down into the valley below. A draw is even better, but just don’t let your slice kick in, or you’ll create a lot of work for yourself hitting back toward the Atlantic. Straight play in general is the goal at Highland, because the rough is really rough, the knolls can play tricks with your rolls, and the greens are designed to punish
imperfection.

Attitude is everything in golf, and Highland has a habit of accentuating mental states: good moods suddenly turn great at the miraculous good fortune we enjoy being able to visit such a place, and blah moods turn foul at the discovery that we really have no business stepping onto a golf course at all – much less attempting to reach that uphill green 100 yards away with a wedge when it should have been more like a five-wood.

If you never want to see or play another golf course, if you don’t like the game and don’t understand why anyone does, this place is still worth a visit. A person could probably have a fine time walking this nine without clubs and balls, but those who do gear up for a play would be well advised to carry an extra ball in pocket, just in case.

Highland is located inside the Cape Cod National Seashore, perched on the sandy cliffs of Truro east of Route 6. At more than 100 years old, Highland stands as one of the nation’s first golf resorts. Although the resort’s 1907 hotel is no longer operational, functioning now as the Truro Historical Museum, you don’t need any imagination at all to get a feel for life at the dawn of
the last century.

Fees are : $30 for 9 holes, $60 for 18. Call the pro shop at 508-487-9201.
For more short-course options, see the map and listing information at the front of the publication. Among the more noteworthy are Harwich Port Golf Course (508-432-0250) in the village of the same name, the links at Bayberry Hills (508-394-5597) in South Yarmouth (on the site of the former landfill), Paul Harney’s Golf Course (508-563-3454) in Hatchville and the Woodbriar Golf Course in Falmouth. All you have to do is get to any one of these courses, and leave behind your worries about time and money.
